"Self-Portrait Our Politics Must Overcome"
"We Must Not Tarnish the Noble Name of Democracy"
Amid controversy over extreme opposition supporters mocking the death of President Yoon Seok-yeol's father, Lee Won-wook, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, "It is shameful" and "We must uphold human decency."
On the 17th, Lee pointed out several SNS posts criticizing President Yoon's father's death on his social media, calling it "a self-portrait that our politics must overcome."
The problematic posts he cited included phrases such as "It seems the patriotic martyrs are very angry in the afterlife after hearing the congratulatory speech^^," "May he be reborn in hell," "May he enter the fiery hell pit even in the afterlife~," "Next is Gong's turn," and "The day he was freed from his son." 'Gong' is a derogatory term for President Yoon.
Opposition supporters are flooding SNS with critical posts about President Yoon's father's death. Columnist Wi Geun-woo linked an article about the death on SNS and wrote, "Ah, it seems the life he wasted went wrong," which also sparked controversy.
Lee said, "No matter how much you hate someone, you must uphold human decency toward the deceased," adding, "We should remain silent in front of the bereaved family for a while. Shouldn't we button up our collars and have a solemn heart?"
