'Concrete Utopia' Challenges for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film
Selected as a Korean Film Submission by Yeongjinwi
"'Apartment' Effectively Reveals the Desires of Character Ensemble"
"Lotte Ent. Must Implement Bold Promotion Strategies in the US"
Director Eom Tae-hwa's 'Concrete Utopia' has been selected as South Korea's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at next year's Academy Awards. The Korean Film Council announced on the 17th that the decision was made unanimously, highly valuing the film's Korean identity combined with a global standard orientation, as well as its balance between artistry and popularity. The judging panel included director Bang Eun-jin, CEO Kim Yoon-mi of OLL, director Kim Cho-hee, and critic Kim Hyung-seok.
This selection was tailored considering the conservative nature of the Academy Awards. In particular, it was judged that the film's Korean themes, which can resonate globally, would be accepted without resistance. The panel noted, "While the directing skills are somewhat lacking," they praised that "through the 'apartment,' which symbolizes class and wealth in Korea, the film effectively reveals the diverse desires of the characters." They added, "In the current era where global recession and natural disasters strike various parts of the earth, the film addresses the theme of 'class' by featuring ordinary people rather than heroes," and stated, "The value of its conclusion is quite significant."
The domestic and international recognition and acting of Lee Byung-hun also influenced the selection. The panel highly praised, "Lee Byung-hun effectively leads the story, creating an original work."
Only one film per country can be submitted for the Best International Feature Film category. The submitted film must be screened in a theater in Los Angeles, USA, for at least one week. Since the awards ceremony is based in North America, screening in this region is essential. To meet the eligibility requirements and achieve a certain level of box office success, sufficient capital support is necessary. The panel urged, "Lotte Entertainment, the distributor, should select and appoint an agent in the US and implement bold promotional strategies," and requested, "Please proceed with determination."
