North Korea: "Defector US Soldier Disillusioned by American Racism... Expressed Intent to Seek Asylum"
North Korea Officially Mentions US Soldier's Defection for the First Time in a Month
"Resentment Over Inhumane Abuse and Racism Within US Military"
North Korea made its first official statement on the 16th regarding Private Travis King, a U.S. soldier who illegally defected to North Korea on the 18th of last month. According to North Korean authorities, Private King crossed over to North Korea due to disillusionment with inhumane abuse and racial discrimination within the U.S. military and expressed his intention to seek asylum.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released a report titled "Interim Investigation Results on U.S. Soldier Travis King" on the same day, stating, "An incident of illegal intrusion by Private King into North Korean territory occurred," and disclosed the circumstances of his defection on the 18th of last month. The agency explained, "While touring the Joint Security Area (JSA) disguised among tourists, King deliberately crossed into our side between the Korea-U.S. Military Contact Office and the Military Police Rest Area on the Military Demarcation Line and was apprehended by Korean People's Army soldiers on duty."
It continued, "According to the investigation by the relevant authorities, Travis King admitted to illegally entering the territory of the Republic," and claimed, "He confessed that he harbored resentment against inhumane abuse and racial discrimination within the U.S. military and decided to defect to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."
Furthermore, "Travis King also expressed disillusionment with the unequal American society and stated his intention to seek asylum either in our country (North Korea) or a third country," the report added. However, since the North announced it would continue investigating King, it is expected that the possibility of his release in the near future is low.

Private King had been detained for nearly two months due to incidents including assault in South Korea and was scheduled to be repatriated to the United States on the 17th of last month for additional disciplinary action. However, he fled without boarding the plane at Incheon Airport, participated in a tour of the Joint Security Area (JSA) the following day, and during this process, defected to North Korea without authorization. After the incident, the United States attempted to contact the North through the United Nations Command regarding King's status, but meaningful communication has reportedly not been established, and even his safety remains unconfirmed.
