The Jaseng International Academic Conference, held on the 13th, marked its 4th year. This year's conference, held at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas Hotel in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, featured Dr. Jun-Sik Shin, the founder of Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospital, faculty members from Michigan State University, senior members of the British Medical Acupuncture Society, and 10 top experts in the medical field from Canada, Australia, and other countries as speakers. About 500 medical professionals, including Korean medicine doctors and medical doctors from various countries, also attended.
According to Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospital, interest in 'integrative medicine,' which supplements the shortcomings of modern medicine with other medical systems such as Korean medicine, is increasing. Research results also show that integrative medicine is an effective and safe treatment method for patients for whom surgery and drug therapy are difficult. According to a global research firm, the global scale of integrative medicine is expected to grow by more than 20% annually, reaching approximately $37 billion (about 49.2 trillion KRW) by 2035.
Divided into two parts, this conference discussed the latest trends and research achievements in manual therapy aimed at reducing invasive treatments and drug side effects under the theme of 'Integrative Manual Therapy and Clinical Application.' In the second part, research results and case studies on acupuncture treatment based on medical evidence and objective data were covered.
In the keynote lecture, Dr. Jun-Sik Shin analyzed Chuna therapy and motion acupuncture from an integrative medical perspective under the theme 'Integrative Medical Approach to Temporomandibular Joint Disorders.' Dr. Shin introduced actual cases of patients with temporomandibular joint disorders and explained the treatment mechanism to the audience by demonstrating the therapy directly.
Following this, in the first session of Part 1, Lawrence Prokop, former president of the Michigan Osteopathic Physicians Association and an expert in manual therapy from the United States, explained osteopathic manual therapy for voice disorders. He emphasized the various advantages and applications of manual therapy and the importance of exchanging the latest knowledge between countries.
A presentation on the effects of Korean medicine treatment for cervical pain (neck pain) followed. Jin-Ho Lee, director of Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospital, presented the latest trends and medical evidence for Korean medicine treatment of cervical pain and proposed a development direction to enhance the safety and effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment through the use of medical devices. Catherine Donahue, professor at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, explained osteopathic manual therapy methods for the cervical spine and shoulder joint through burns in the United States and analyzed treatment outcomes.
In Part 2, David Coggin, editor-in-chief of the SCI(E)-level international journal in acupuncture treatment, Acupuncture in Medicine, shared the safety of acupuncture treatment during pregnancy, focusing on acupuncture and its efficacy for pain treatment in pregnant women for whom drug therapy or surgery is difficult. Mike Cummings, president of the British Medical Acupuncture Society, introduced methods of treating chronic pain with acupuncture by comprehensively interpreting Eastern and Western medical perspectives. Kien Trinh, professor at McMaster University Faculty of Medicine in Canada, also presented acupuncture treatment cases performed at the Olympic and Pan American Games as a national team doctor.
Byung-Mo Park, chairman of the Jaseng Medical Foundation, said, "I hope this academic conference, where medical experts from East and West gather their intellect and share research results, will serve as an opportunity to further advance Korean medicine from the perspective of integrative treatment." He added, "We will continue to create various opportunities for cooperation with leading global institutions to widely promote and utilize the value of Korean medicine."
