"60-Year-Old Quack Jailed for Deceiving Patients with 'Enzyme Powder Cures Cancer'"
Blocking Radiation Therapy and Using Homemade 'Enzyme Powder' Treatment
Cancer Patient's Condition Worsens... Family Demands Severe Punishment
A man in his 60s who caused a cancer patient to stop conventional medical treatment and provided unlicensed medical care by claiming that eating the 'enzyme powder' he made would cure cancer was found guilty.
On the 13th, Judge Yoo Dong-gyun of the Criminal Division 24 at the Seoul Central District Court sentenced A (69) to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation and a fine of 3 million won on charges of violating the Medical Crime Control Act (illegal medical practitioner).
Although A was not a licensed Korean medicine doctor, he claimed that he could treat cancer patients with the enzyme powder he made. In November 2016, he told a family member of a cancer patient who came to him through an introduction by an acquaintance, "You can be cured with enzyme treatment, but to have treatment effects, you must stop radiation imaging, computed tomography (CT) scans, and taking Western medicine."
The desperate family discharged the patient and entrusted treatment to A. From December of that year to June of the following year, A sent enzyme powder to the patient several times and examined the patient by pressing the abdomen, back, and neck areas in person. He also performed acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy.
A emphasized, "You must never receive radiation or ultrasound because they kill immunity," and received a total of 5 million won as treatment and medicine fees. The patient, who did not receive timely hospital treatment, experienced worsening of the disease.
The prosecution indicted A, stating that although he was not a licensed Korean medicine doctor, he engaged in Korean medical practice for profit.

The court explained the sentencing, saying, "Due to A's unlicensed medical practice, the patient stopped medically verified anticancer treatment and the condition worsened. The patient and family are petitioning for severe punishment," but also considered "that the enzyme treatment was done at the patient's request and that A's criminal proceeds were not substantial."
