One Dead, One Missing as Typhoon Approaches... 300mm Heavy Rainfall
Rescue Cases Continue in Southern Region
Typhoon Khanun, the 6th typhoon of the year, made landfall on the Korean Peninsula on the 10th and is moving northward, causing a series of related damages. In particular, in the southern regions where around 300mm of rain fell since the previous day, cases of missing and deceased individuals have occurred.

View original imageAccording to related agencies, in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, one person has died and one person is missing so far.
In Namcheon under Byeongcheon Bridge in Hyoryeong-myeon, Gunwi-gun, Gyeongbuk, a 67-year-old man was found in cardiac arrest at around 1:10 p.m. that day. The man was transported to a hospital in Daegu city but ultimately passed away.
Also, at around 1:45 p.m., a report was received from Sangwon-ri, Gachang-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu, stating that "a person riding an electric wheelchair fell into a ditch," and authorities are searching for a man in his 60s.
At the Museong-ri point in Gunwi-gun, Gyeongbuk, in the Nakdong River basin, a flood warning was issued as of 2 p.m., and around noon, about 20 rescue reports were received from Gunwi, including "lost contact with family," "grandmother isolated," and "embankment collapsed." At around 9:45 a.m., a car was trapped due to flooding in an underground passage in Sanjeon-ri, Namcheon-myeon, Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongbuk, and the police rescued a female driver in her 70s. In Gyeongbuk, 18 people were temporarily trapped due to road flooding and river overflow but were rescued by fire services and others that day.
In Changwon, Gyeongnam, at around 8 a.m., a manhole cover popped up and pierced the floor of a city bus, posing a safety threat. At that time, about 5 to 6 drivers and passengers were on the bus, and the accident occurred while the bus was briefly stopped during driving. The part where the manhole cover pierced upward was the central part of the vehicle body, not the passenger seat area, so no one was injured.
Additionally, in Buyeo-gun, Chungnam, a woman in her 30s who was passing by with an umbrella was injured by a fallen tree, and in Gokseong, Jeonnam, a resident was injured in the arm after falling while removing items and household goods from a collapsed house.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, as of 11 a.m. that day, 10,641 people were evacuated from 83 cities, counties, and districts in 12 metropolitan cities and provinces. Gyeongbuk had the highest number with 6,569 people, followed by Gyeongnam with 2,695, Jeonnam with 948, and Busan with 331.
Also, 490 roads, 255 riverside parking lots, 525 riverside areas, and 166 coastal areas were preemptively controlled. All 613 trails and forest paths in 21 national parks, including Jirisan, were also under control.

A total of 1,579 kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide adjusted their operating schedules due to the typhoon. Although this accounts for 8.1% of all schools (19,602 schools), when narrowed down to schools that have started the semester (3,333 schools), 47.4% adjusted their academic operation schedules.
