'Meoksayeon Illegal Donation' Former Chairman of Yeosu Chamber of Commerce Summoned for Prosecutor Investigation
The prosecution investigating the Democratic Party of Korea's '2021 Party Convention Money Envelope Distribution Suspicion' has summoned a former chairman of the Yeosu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who is suspected of illegally sponsoring Song Young-gil's affiliated organization, the "Peace and Livelihood Issues Research Institute" (Meoksayeon).
According to the legal community on the 9th, the Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-cheol) summoned former Yeosu Chamber chairman Park Yong-ha as a suspect on charges of violating the Political Funds Act and questioned him the day before.
The prosecution reportedly questioned former chairman Park about the circumstances under which he sponsored Meoksayeon with several hundred million won and whether he coordinated the sponsorship amount with Song's side.
The prosecution believes that the Yeosu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where former chairman Park worked, illegally sponsored Meoksayeon with several hundred million won in a manner inconsistent with its operational purpose. From July 2018 to February 2021, during Park's tenure, the Yeosu Chamber made five payments totaling 80 million won to Meoksayeon under the name of donations and sponsorships. Notably, it concentrated 40 million won in sponsorships during January and February 2021, about three months before the Democratic Party's 2021 party convention.
In addition, former chairman Park is known to have donated approximately 250 million won to Meoksayeon through a waste disposal company he operates and companies where he serves as an inside director.
