Tous Les Jours Introduces Straws Made with Bio-Based Material 'PHA'
CJ Foodville's Tous Les Jours announced on the 9th that it will be the first domestic franchise in Korea to introduce straws made from the bio-material ‘PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate)’ developed and researched by CJ CheilJedang.
Starting with direct management stores for a pilot introduction, the plan is to expand the use of these straws for takeout at Tous Les Jours stores nationwide by the third quarter of this year.
PHA is a polymer material accumulated inside microbial cells after consuming plant-derived substances, characterized by its ability to decompose in most environments including soil and marine settings. It is a material applicable in various fields such as packaging for daily necessities and cosmetic containers, and is emerging globally as an alternative amid the growing movement to ‘phase out petroleum-based plastics.’

The straws introduced at Tous Les Jours are made from a blend of PHA and industrial biodegradable material PLA, featuring a soft texture and high durability. In particular, they provide a similar user experience to regular plastic straws, allowing for use without any discomfort. Through this, approximately 10 million straws used annually at Tous Les Jours can be replaced with PHA-applied straws.
