Due to consecutive heatwaves, S-1's demand for 'Automated External Defibrillators' has significantly increased
Cardiac Arrest Increases by 1.3% for Every 1°C Rise
S1 AED Sales Surge
Real-Time Management with Online Monitoring Solution
As the deadly heatwave continues day after day, interest in automated external defibrillators (AEDs) is increasing. This is because heat-related illnesses caused by the heat are leading to cardiac arrest incidents one after another. In fact, it has been found that the incidence of acute cardiac arrest increases by 1.3% for every 1 degree Celsius rise in summer temperature. Research also shows that even healthy adults begin to experience strain on their hearts at around 34 degrees Celsius in humid weather.
On the 1st, S-1 announced that its average monthly sales of AEDs recently doubled compared to last year. S-1’s security service sales, which include AED sales, grew about 5% year-on-year to 319.3 billion KRW in the second quarter of this year. The mandatory installation of AEDs in workplaces with more than 300 employees since December last year and the recent increase in cardiac arrest incidents due to the heatwave have driven up demand for AEDs.
In particular, S-1 has introduced an AED online monitoring solution (RMS) to help easily manage AEDs. This measure was taken considering that despite the expansion of AED distribution, some workplaces have poor management, rendering the devices useless in emergencies. A 2020 inspection of AED management status in Gyeonggi Province found that one out of three AEDs was unusable.
S-1’s solution prevents such problems by monitoring AED status in real time and providing daily inspections and alarm services in case of abnormalities. Additionally, managers can check the usability, expiration dates, and current locations of AED units and accessories through a dedicated website and mobile application without visiting the site. An S-1 official explained, "Given the life-saving nature of AED devices, expanding distribution is important, but even more crucial is regular maintenance to prepare for emergencies."
One of the reasons S-1 AEDs are gaining popularity is that they have shortened the entire process from electrode pad attachment to electrocardiogram analysis to secure the 'golden time.' For cardiac arrest patients, using an AED along with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within 4 minutes can increase survival rates up to 80%. Since the golden time is short, using the AED even a second faster is critical. While conventional AEDs require electrode pads to be attached precisely to designated left and right positions to operate, S-1 AEDs can be attached without distinguishing left or right, enabling faster response. The time for 'electrocardiogram analysis' before electric shock, which took about 10 seconds with existing devices, has been drastically reduced to 2 seconds with S-1.

S-1 is also strengthening efforts to increase AED utilization by providing training to prevent situations where AEDs are not used due to lack of knowledge. Upon customer request, they offer CPR on-site training services by professional instructors along with AED usage instructions. So far, about 105,000 people have completed CPR training courses through S-1. An S-1 official stated, "As the number one company in the security industry, we will take the lead in creating a culture of social safety through infrastructure expansion."
