Yoon Reviews 'Minimum Schedule' Vacation... Variables Including Cabinet Reshuffle and Preparation for US Visit
Originally Canceled Due to Expanded Flood Damage... Review Considering Domestic Economy
Cabinet Reshuffle and Preparation for Korea-US-Japan Summit... Polish President's Visit Also a Variable
It has been reported that President Yoon Suk-yeol is considering taking a summer vacation with a minimal schedule in early next month. Initially, he did not plan a vacation due to the need to prepare measures for flood damage caused by heavy rain, but the plan is being reconsidered in light of public sector vacations and efforts to revitalize the domestic economy.
The Presidential Office stated shortly after President Yoon's visits to NATO, Poland, and Ukraine, "There are too many urgent national issues to handle right now, so it does not seem like the time to discuss a vacation," but also mentioned, "We will focus on national issues and consider whether there is a way to take a short break at an appropriate time." Although the vacation was canceled due to the ongoing severe flood damage caused by heavy rain, as the rainy season ends and the government focuses on 'post-measures,' it is said that specific schedules are being coordinated.
There are some variables. Starting with the appointment of Lee Dong-gwan, President Yoon's Special Advisor for External Cooperation, as the new chairman of the Korea Communications Commission on the 28th, a sequential cabinet reshuffle must be completed. The reshuffle of ministries other than the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is expected in early next month. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Environment are also being discussed, and it is known that the replacement of Minister Lee Chang-yang of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is virtually confirmed. Visit Kyoo, the Director of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, is a strong candidate for the successor of the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. Director Bang has been mentioned as the new Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy since the cabinet reshuffle at the end of June.
Preparation is also needed for the Korea-US-Japan summit meeting to be held on the 18th of next month (local time) at Camp David, the US President's private retreat. The meeting between the leaders of Korea, the US, and Japan has been renamed from a summit to a meeting, and since it is the first separate meeting rather than a multilateral conference, it is expected to be a significant occasion for strengthening trilateral cooperation.
This is the first time in history that the leaders of Korea, the US, and Japan meet separately rather than as part of a multilateral conference. Previously, Korea-US-Japan summits were held 12 times in total, starting with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Indonesia in November 1994 as part of multilateral meetings. Since the launch of the Yoon administration, a total of three Korea-US-Japan summits?the most held by any administration?have taken place. These include the NATO summit held in Madrid, Spain, in June last year, the ASEAN summit held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in November, and the G7 summit held in Hiroshima, Japan, in May this year.

Additionally, it is known that the visit of Polish President Andrzej Duda to Korea, coinciding with the 2023 World Scout Jamboree to be held in Saemangeum in early next month, is also being considered. However, aides within the Presidential Office are mindful that the president's vacation itself has a considerable impact on the public sector and the private economy. When President Yoon took his first vacation in August last year, he canceled plans to visit local resorts such as Jeodo and sites related to people’s livelihoods and stayed at his private residence in Seocho-dong for five days.
