Gyeonggi-do Prepares Implementation Plan for Promotion of Architectural Assets Including Hanok
Gyeonggi Province is establishing and implementing the '2nd Gyeonggi Province Architectural Heritage Promotion Implementation Plan' to preserve and utilize the value of architectural assets such as Hanok.
The Gyeonggi Province Architectural Heritage Promotion Implementation Plan is a statutory plan established every five years by the provincial governor in connection with the national basic plan for architectural heritage promotion. Following the first plan in 2018, Gyeonggi Province was the first among the 17 metropolitan local governments to establish the second plan.
Architectural assets refer to buildings, spatial environments, and infrastructure that possess social, economic, and scenic values valid for the present and future, including those with unique historical and cultural values such as Hanok, contributing to the promotion of national architectural culture and the formation of regional identity. However, cultural properties designated or registered under the Cultural Heritage Protection Act are excluded.
This plan will be carried out over five years from 2023 to 2027, targeting all 31 cities and counties in the province. Under the vision of 'Gyeonggi Province Architectural Heritage with Residents,' three main goals have been set: ▲ Establishing a foundation and basic capabilities for architectural heritage promotion ▲ Promoting activation of architectural heritage ▲ Enhancing awareness and deepening understanding.
Additionally, nine practical tasks have been prepared, including basic surveys of architectural heritage, documentation, establishment of implementation organizational systems, expansion of registration of excellent architectural heritage, designation and maintenance of promotion zones, Hanok promotion, establishment of publicity foundations, and development of education and tour programs.
The implementation plan can be viewed through the Gyeonggi Architecture Portal. For inquiries, contact the Green Architecture Culture Team of the Architectural Design Division at Gyeonggi Provincial Government.
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province registered the Maehyang-ri Kunisa Shooting Range as the nation’s first excellent architectural heritage site in 2016. Since 2020, it has been leading the promotion of architectural heritage policies by supporting Hanok construction and repair to preserve and revitalize Hanok.
