This appointment follows the previous ambassadors: ▲actor Lee Jung-jae ▲virtual human Rozy ▲BTS ▲opera singer Sumi Jo ▲Baby Shark, making him the sixth.
The appointment ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10:30 a.m. on the 25th in the International Protocol Room at City Hall, co-hosted by the 2030 Busan World Expo Bid Committee and Busan City.
Mayor Park Hyung-joon and Lee Kyung-ho, head of the support team for the 2030 Busan World Expo Bid Committee, will attend the ceremony, personally presenting the appointment plaque to Myung-Whun Chung and expressing their gratitude.
Myung-Whun Chung, appointed as an ambassador this time, is a world-class conductor representing Korea and serves as a UNICEF international ambassador, actively leading efforts against drug abuse and supporting youth relief and educational activities.
He has also been actively engaged in continuous social contribution activities, such as organizing a charity concert for relief efforts following the 2008 oil spill accident on the Taean Peninsula.
Based on his deep understanding of the national importance and significance of the 2030 Busan World Expo bid, he conducted the orchestra at the ‘2030 Busan World Expo Bid Special Concert’ held in Busan last August, helping to build nationwide support for the bid.
With this ambassador appointment, Myung-Whun Chung plans to carry out various activities to support the 2030 Busan World Expo bid, including encouraging participation from cultural and artistic organizations and artists, and supporting negotiation efforts to rally domestic and international support.
The city and the government are conducting an all-out ‘total war’ in all areas, including negotiations and promotional activities, to secure the 2030 Busan World Expo hosting rights ahead of the decision scheduled for November, achieving meaningful results through these efforts.
At the 172nd General Assembly of the International Bureau of Expositions (BIE) held in Paris, France, last June, President Yoon Suk-yeol personally delivered a speech during the competitive presentation (PT), strongly expressing Korea’s determination to host the 2030 World Expo in Busan by stating, “Korea will create the most perfect World Expo in history,” which garnered significant support from member countries.
Additionally, in early July, Busan hosted the ‘Saemaul Movement Global Cooperation Ministers’ Meeting,’ attended by many BIE member countries, actively conducting diplomatic efforts by reaffirming Korea’s commitment to the 2030 Busan World Expo to cooperating countries.
Mayor Park Hyung-joon said, “With the final host city selection approaching in November, domestic and international promotion is more important than ever. I sincerely thank world-renowned conductor Myung-Whun Chung, who represents Korea, for lending his strength as an ambassador.” He added, “Our city will continue to mobilize all its capabilities and sprint forward to ensure the 2030 World Expo is successfully hosted in Busan.”
