"Let's Collect 3% of Lawmakers' Salaries, 380,000 Won Per Person"
Support for Affected Citizens 'Resolution on Voluntary Contributions' Passed
The National Assembly has decided to raise 110 million won in donations to support citizens affected by the heavy rain damage.
On the afternoon of the same day, the National Assembly passed the "Donation Collection Bill," which requires members of the National Assembly to contribute an amount equivalent to 3% of their July allowance.
Accordingly, all 299 members of the National Assembly will contribute an amount equivalent to 3% of their July allowance as support funds for disaster recovery. This amounts to about 380,000 won per person, and if all 299 members contribute, the total exceeds 110 million won. The flood relief donations will be collected by deducting a portion from the members' monthly salaries.
Kim Jin-pyo, Speaker of the National Assembly, said at the plenary session, "Although this is a natural disaster, since heavy rain was already predicted, this disaster was almost inevitable," adding, "We cannot help but reflect on whether there was sufficient preparation before and response after the disaster."
