Police Arrest 68,406 Suspects of Violent Theft and Domestic Violence Over 3 Months
Intensive Crackdown on Crimes Infringing on Ordinary Citizens' Lives Starting March 27
The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters (Guksubon) announced on the 9th that it conducted an intensive crackdown on violent crimes around daily life for three months from March 27 to last month 30, detecting a total of 32,096 cases and arresting 33,676 people (553 detained).
According to the police, violent crimes, which numbered 232,018 cases in 2021, increased by about 5.5% to 244,697 cases last year.
By location of occurrence, daily life surroundings such as streets, convenience stores, and public transportation accounted for the largest number with 29,514 cases (92.0%), followed by labor site violent crimes with 2,432 cases (7.6%), and medical site violent crimes with 150 cases (0.4%).
In addition, cases of violent crimes occurring under intoxication accounted for a significant portion at 56.6%. The police linked offenders showing alcohol addiction to integrated addiction management centers and other facilities to support their treatment and healthy reintegration into society.
Representative cases include a suspect who was arrested in May for threatening a restaurant owner with a weapon after being reported for obstruction of business, and in April, an employee dissatisfied with a personnel appointment was caught after causing a disturbance with a weapon inside the company.
The police also arrested 29,338 suspects of robbery and theft, 4,166 suspects of embezzlement of lost property, 981 suspects of telecommunication financial fraud, and 245 suspects of dealing in stolen goods during this crackdown. Among the robbery and theft suspects, 1,238 were detained.
Last month, the police arrested and detained a suspect who broke into the home of an elderly person living alone, stabbed the victim with a weapon causing injury, and fled after stealing 500,000 won in cash. In April, a group was caught after drilling through an apartment entrance door and stealing 480 million won from a safe.

A National Police Agency official stated, "Even after this intensive crackdown, we plan to analyze vulnerable factors by region to strengthen prevention activities and maintain a constant crackdown system."
