Jeonbuk National University Hospital (Director Yoo Hee-cheol) announced on the 6th that it has signed a business agreement with the global medical device company Korea Johnson & Johnson Medical (CEO Oh Jin-yong) to respond to the ultra-aged society and develop innovative medical technologies.

Jeonbuk National University Hospital will work with Korea Johnson & Johnson Medical to research and develop innovative medical devices based on artificial intelligence and big data, and cooperate to foster startups for the development of advanced medical devices. They will also collaborate on clinical trials of medical devices and medical staff training to advance patient treatment.
The signing ceremony was held on the 4th at the Ongoeul Hall on the 3rd floor of the main building of Jeonbuk National University Hospital. Attendees included Yoo Hee-cheol, Director of Jeonbuk National University Hospital, Lee Sik, Deputy Director of Clinical Services, Oh Jin-yong, President of Johnson & Johnson Medical North Asia, and Tim Schmidt, Chairman of Asia Pacific.
Jeonbuk National University Hospital introduced the artificial intelligence-based hip joint disease diagnosis and surgical planning software being developed by Professor Yoon Seon-jung’s orthopedic team, as well as biocompatible carbon material implants developed by the Carbon Material Medical Device Development Support Center (Director Han Gap-su).
They discussed the commercialization and global market entry of innovative medical devices developed by the hospital. They conducted an analysis of Depuy Synthes’ digital platform VHN (Velys Hip Navigation), which helps improve treatment outcomes for hip surgery patients, and agreed to suggest improvements and new development directions for innovative digital products.
The AI-based surgical planning technology uses artificial intelligence trained on surgical big data to create precise surgical plans tailored to individual patients. As a result, it applies minimally invasive surgical methods to help patients achieve more stable biomechanical behavior and faster recovery after surgery. This is an innovative medical technology needed in the ultra-aged society to improve outcomes of hip joint replacement surgeries, which mainly occur in the elderly.
Biocompatible carbon material medical devices have fewer side effects than metal materials (such as titanium) and do not interfere with medical imaging like X-rays and MRIs. They are used as implantable devices in advanced countries and are especially recommended for bone tumor patients as an alternative to metal implants.
Jeonbuk National University Hospital was selected in 2020 for the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s carbon material medical device promotion project and opened the Carbon Material Medical Device Development Support Center in April this year.
