Chinese Changqing Vehicles to Enter Vietnam in August... Accelerating Market Expansion
As the growth of the Chinese electric vehicle market slows down, major companies are accelerating their overseas expansion.
According to Chinese economic media Caixin on the 29th, Changcheng Automobile plans to officially enter the Vietnamese market in August. Initially, it will export finished vehicles produced at its Thai factory to Vietnam, and by 2025, it plans to establish a new energy vehicle assembly plant locally.
As of last year, Vietnam's vehicle sales volume was about 500,000 units, making it the fourth largest automobile market in the ASEAN region after Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Changcheng Automobile currently operates in six ASEAN countries including Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Brunei, the Philippines, and Cambodia, and plans to sequentially enter Vietnam, Singapore, and Indonesia in the second half of this year.
Thailand is a country where competition among Chinese companies is particularly fierce. Electric vehicles account for less than 1% of new car sales in Thailand, indicating a market with significant growth potential.
Changcheng Automobile's Rayong plant in Thailand, completed in June 2021, has an initial production capacity of about 80,000 units per year, with plans to expand to 120,000 units. Currently, it produces gasoline-electric hybrid models.
Local Thai media reported that Changcheng Automobile plans to start producing pure electric vehicles in Thailand from 2024. Honeycomb Energy, which was once Changcheng Automobile's battery division and spun off in 2018, also plans to build a battery pack factory in Thailand. BYD, the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, began construction of its Thai production plant in September last year and is preparing to start operations next year.
