ChatGPT Developer OpenAI Opens First Overseas Office in London, UK
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT leading the generative artificial intelligence (AI) boom, has established its first overseas office.
On the 28th (local time), OpenAI announced that it had chosen London, UK, as the city to establish its first office outside the United States. OpenAI stated, "The first overseas office in London marks a milestone in OpenAI's growth," adding, "It demonstrates our commitment to accelerating the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that benefits all humanity by expanding the scope of our corporate operations and incorporating diverse perspectives."
Headquartered in San Francisco, this is the first time since its founding in 2015 that OpenAI has opened an overseas office. Earlier, CEO Sam Altman revealed plans to establish an office in Europe, naming Poland, France, and the UK as potential candidates. In particular, OpenAI reportedly chose London as the location for its first overseas office due to its access to a world-class pool of talented professionals. London is also home to DeepMind, Google's AI strategy-leading research institute. OpenAI plans to focus on hiring in research, engineering, and business sectors at the London office going forward.
