Gurye-gun Completes Restoration of Water Intake and Purification Plants Damaged by Floods
‘Gurye Chwisujang, Seomjingang Jeongsujang Disaster Recovery Project’ Completed
Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Soon-ho) announced that it has completed the disaster recovery project for the Gurye Water Intake Station and the Seomjin River Water Purification Plant, which were flooded due to record heavy rain on August 7, 2020, and has finished the final completion inspection.
The county experienced significant difficulties as the heavy rain caused flooding at the Gurye Water Intake Station and the Seomjin River Water Purification Plant, resulting in the suspension of water supply to the entire Gurye-gun area except for Sandong-myeon, leading to inconvenience for residents who had no water for drinking and washing. However, the county actively worked to secure disaster recovery funds and find solutions.
This disaster recovery project, aimed at permanent restoration of the flooded facilities, involved a total recovery cost of 7.1 billion KRW, including 5.3 billion KRW in national funds and 1.8 billion KRW in local funds. The basic and detailed design service began in December 2020, construction started in November 2021, and was completed in 20 months.
A Gurye-gun official stated, "Due to abnormal climate, heavy rain is expected again this summer. We thank the construction personnel for safely completing the project before the full rainy season begins. We will do our best to prevent recurrence of flood damage through thorough preparation and to improve the quality of public water supply administrative services."
Meanwhile, Gurye-gun is promoting the second phase expansion project of the local water supply system in the Toji area, the expansion project of the local water supply system in the Hwangjeon district, and the small-scale water facility improvement project in the Maejae district to alleviate inconvenience for residents in areas without local water supply. The county is also implementing a local water supply modernization project aiming to achieve a water loss rate of 85% to provide clean water stably.
