National Police Agency to Implement Major Reforms in Training... Strengthening Physical Force Response Drills
Improvement of Training Methods and Expansion of Training Facilities
The National Police Agency is designating this year as the inaugural year for a major reform in police education and training, and is promoting changes to the education and training system.
On the 19th, a National Police Agency official stated, "The purpose of the major reform in police education and training is to equip personnel?from new police recruits to active-duty officers?with the capabilities to properly respond in various public safety situations." In this regard, improvements are being made to the content and methods of education and training, as well as the expansion of training facilities.
The Central Police Academy, which trains new police officers, recently established a comprehensive physical force response training ground and plans to conduct training for new recruits entering in June. The training simulates real situations from the reporting and dispatch stage to the arrest of suspects carrying dangerous items, providing step-by-step experiential training on the use of physical force.
Active-duty officers working at district police stations and police boxes have also seen improvements in their training. Previously conducted for about one hour per month or three hours per quarter, the training has been enhanced to intensive education and training sessions lasting eight hours once every six months, led by professional instructors.
The National Police Agency is developing educational scenarios that include on-site response methods for 12 types of frequent 112 emergency calls, such as domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, child abuse, and weapon-related rampages. Additionally, through job and competency analyses, the education curriculum will be completely revamped within this year.
