Taxi Driver Sentenced for Fraudulent Insurance Claim... "Targeted Only Signal-Violating Vehicles"
The Changwon District Court Criminal Division 6 (Judge Kim Jae-yoon) announced on the 15th that it sentenced a taxi driver in his 60s, Mr. A, who was indicted on charges including special injury, to 1 year and 4 months in prison with a 3-year probation.
Mr. A was indicted on charges of deliberately colliding with a vehicle making a left turn after crossing the center line while driving a taxi on a road in Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongnam, in October 2018, and receiving approximately 35 million won in insurance payments over eight occasions until April last year through such methods.
In October 2020, Mr. A also deliberately struck a vehicle making a left turn in violation of a traffic signal at an intersection in Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si, and received 300,000 won on the spot from the victim. Due to Mr. A’s intentional accident, a passenger in the taxi at the time suffered a concussion.

The court stated the reasons for sentencing, saying, "The insurance fraud crime is not only about Mr. A receiving insurance money but also imposes the burden of increased insurance premiums on policyholders who faithfully pay their premiums, which is a serious offense," and "considering that the crimes occurred over a long period."
