Cooling Fog Activated at Songjeong Station and Plans to Add Shade Shelters at Crosswalks
Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Park Byeong-gyu) is fully operating a response system to prevent heatwave damage.
According to Gwangsan-gu on the 14th, water spraying trucks began operating from the previous day to alleviate the urban heat island phenomenon. Going forward, water spraying trucks will operate twice daily along a 21 km section of major roads including Hanam-dong, Unnam-dong, Sinchang-dong, and Cheomdan-dong.
Crosswalk shade shelters, which greatly benefit residents, have been operating at 158 locations since May, and additional installations are being pursued. Demand surveys are underway in 21 neighborhoods, and the installation of shade shelters is planned to be completed by early next month to help citizens avoid the scorching sun.
Cooling fog systems installed at KTX Gwangju Songjeong Station and Ssangam Neighborhood Park, where there is a large floating population, will be operational starting today.
Measures to protect heatwave-vulnerable groups will also be implemented. 500 cooling packs will be distributed in cooperation with each neighborhood administrative welfare center, and cooling costs for 388 senior centers designated as heatwave shelters will be collectively supported next month.
Additionally, support will be provided for installing ventilation fans at local livestock farms, and frequent guidance and inspections will be conducted at construction sites to actively prevent heatwave damage in outdoor labor environments.
An ongoing heat-related illness monitoring system will be operated, and in case of heat-related illness occurrences, quick responses will be coordinated with nine emergency medical institutions within the district.
Regarding the prevention of drowning accidents among water recreation visitors, safety personnel will be stationed at Imgokgyo Bridge, and lifesaving boxes will be installed at 13 locations to prepare for any emergencies.
During hot hours, citizens are advised to take breaks, and if symptoms such as dizziness or headaches occur, to move to a cool place to rest and slowly drink cool beverages. Public action guidelines for heatwave situations will also be promoted.
