Romania is promoting a project to replace the existing coal-fired power plant located in the Doice?ti area with SMRs based on NuScale technology, a leading SMR company. Commercial operation is targeted for 2029.
The CEOs of each company attended the signing ceremony, agreeing to cooperate throughout the entire process of the Romanian SMR project, from planning, licensing, design, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution to financing. They also plan to expand SMR projects based on NuScale technology throughout Europe, centered on Romania. Samsung C&T plans to secure SMR-related capabilities starting with participation in the basic design and proceeding to EPC execution.
NuScale Power is the only company to have received design certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). It is currently promoting an SMR project in Idaho, USA, aiming for completion in 2029, the world's first of its kind. Samsung C&T has invested $70 million in NuScale Power to secure a leading position in the next-generation nuclear power technology SMR market and is cooperating comprehensively.
O Se-cheol, President of Samsung C&T, said, "The Romanian SMR project is a very important first milestone to achieve the carbon neutrality goal by 2050 and energy transition in Europe," adding, "Through participation in this project, we have established a foothold for expanding the global SMR market."
