Daejeon Secures 4 Major National Semiconductor Talent Development Projects… Daejeon City "All-Out Effort to Designate Semiconductor Specialized Complex"
Daejeon City, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Chungnam National University have consecutively secured four major national projects for semiconductor talent cultivation. This is expected to have a positive impact on the designation of the national advanced strategic industry specialized complex for semiconductors, which is scheduled to be announced next month.
On the 13th, Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung, and Chungnam National University President Lee Jin-sook held a joint press conference at Daejeon City Hall to announce that they have attracted four major national projects for semiconductor talent cultivation to the region, including the Graduate School of Semiconductor Engineering, Graduate School of AI Semiconductor, Graduate School of Quantum, and Semiconductor Joint Research Institute.
As a result of the attraction, KAIST will establish the Graduate School of Semiconductor Engineering, Graduate School of AI Semiconductor, and Graduate School of Quantum, and operate master's and doctoral programs starting from the fall semester this year.
The Graduate School of Semiconductor Engineering will invest a total budget of 21.5 billion KRW to train 225 advanced master's and doctoral students in semiconductor devices, materials, and packaging fields by 2028, and will establish semiconductor talent cultivation programs and an industry-academia-research exchange platform.
The Graduate School of AI Semiconductor plans to train 165 master's and doctoral students by conducting practical research and industry-academia joint projects such as circuit and chip design, while introducing a dual advisory system for convergence education and research. The operation of this graduate school will involve an investment of 21.3 billion KRW.
The Graduate School of Quantum will develop and operate specialized quantum education courses for master's and doctoral students with a budget of 24.2 billion KRW, train 180 core quantum talents, and promote cooperative projects for the creation of Daejeon City and Daedeok Quantum Valley.
Chungnam National University will invest 35.8 billion KRW to establish the Chungcheong Region Semiconductor Joint Research Institute on campus, which will perform semiconductor education, research, and practical training functions.
Through this, the university plans to provide direct equipment usage education programs to support the semiconductor industry in the Chungcheong region, supply specialized semiconductor personnel, offer technical support for product performance testing (testbed), enhance industry-academia-research joint research, and secure original core technologies.
On this day, Daejeon City also presented a goal to invest 245.5 billion KRW over the next five years, linking national projects and its own projects to produce 1,000 semiconductor talents annually, thereby supporting the development of the domestic semiconductor industry.
In particular, Daejeon City expects that the consecutive attraction of national projects and the designation of the nano-semiconductor national industrial complex selected last March will play a positive role in the designation of the national advanced strategic industry specialized complex to be announced next month. This is in the context that Daejeon’s unique competitiveness in fields such as semiconductor talent cultivation has already been recognized externally.
Mayor Lee Jang-woo of Daejeon emphasized, “Daejeon is a ‘Science Capital’ that evenly possesses technology, talent, and industry in the semiconductor field, and the recent consecutive selections in public contests are the result of external recognition of Daejeon’s strengths.”
