Jeonbuk Jangsu-gun Begins Research on Nutrient Solution Cultivation of 'Gondalbi' Resembling Gomchi
Jangsu-gun, Jeonbuk Province (Governor Choi Hoon-sik) announced on the 9th that it has selected Gondalbi as an alternative crop to leafy vegetables and has started a high-bed (nutrient solution) cultivation trial research.
The county received great responses from farmers due to the effects of solving continuous cropping obstacles of traditional soil cultivation of leafy vegetables, reducing labor, and increasing yield through high-bed cultivation of leafy vegetables.

Accordingly, utilizing the characteristic of existing farmers growing leafy vegetables together with chwinamul, Gondalbi was selected to discover alternative crops to increase farmers' income, and trial research has begun.
The trial research is being conducted at the regional adaptation demonstration research field of the county Agricultural Technology Center, and plans to compare and analyze results by dividing into nutrient solution cultivation and soil cultivation.
The Gondalbi trial research aims to establish nutrient solution composition and environmental management suitable for Gondalbi through growth analysis by substrate during nutrient solution cultivation, and to analyze productivity and management costs compared to soil cultivation, which will be used for guidance to improve farmers' income.
Gondalbi has similar external morphological characteristics to gomchwi but has less bitterness and a unique aroma compared to gomchwi, and is resistant to high temperatures, resulting in high productivity. It is rich in nutrients such as calcium and potassium and has pharmacological effects such as prevention of joint diseases, anti-diabetes, and anti-obesity.
