LG Display announced on the 21st that its research papers on extra-large OLED and stretchable display development technologies were each selected as 'Outstanding Papers of the Year' at SID (Society for Information Display), the International Information Display Society.
SID is the world's largest display society and exhibition where global display companies and researchers gather to showcase new technologies and products and present research papers. Each year, only about 20 out of more than 500 papers receive the Outstanding Paper Award. SID Display Week 2023 is being held from today (local time) for six days until the 26th in Los Angeles, USA. During the event, LG Display plans to present 15 papers in next-generation display fields such as OLED and micro LED.
The research team at the Advanced Technology Research Institute, led by Jaeyoon Jeong, presented their research results on the 'High-Resolution Micro LED Stretchable Display,' which was selected as an outstanding paper. Stretchable displays can be freely transformed into any shape such as stretching, folding, or twisting, and are regarded as the ultimate future display.
The research team developed the industry's first 12-inch stretchable display last year. The screen can stretch up to 20% while simultaneously achieving a resolution of 100 ppi (pixels per inch), comparable to a standard monitor, and full RGB (red, green, blue) color. Through this research, they made significant progress toward commercialization by dramatically improving the resolution, elasticity, and repeated deformation reliability of stretchable displays.

The research team led by Hongjae Shin received the Outstanding Paper Award for their presentation on 'New Concept Extra-Large OLED for Premium TVs,' introducing key technologies for developing and applying OLEDs larger than 80 inches. As OLED screens get larger, it becomes increasingly difficult to uniformly express high image quality. The team was recognized for leading OLED innovation by consecutively developing OLED TV panels larger than 80 inches through improvements in panel and driving technologies, enhancement of organic light-emitting device performance, and bezel minimization.
They introduced the 3rd generation OLED TV panel, which achieved the brightest OLED TV brightness of 2100 nits (1 nit equals the brightness of one candle) using 'Meta Technology' and improved energy efficiency by 22%. This emphasized that LG Display's OLED is optimal even for extra-large TVs. LG Display is the only company in the world mass-producing extra-large OLEDs over 80 inches. Following the 88-inch 8K OLED TV panel in 2018, they mass-produced the largest existing 97-inch OLED TV panel last year, completing a full lineup covering medium to extra-large sizes.
