Seongsu-dong Sampyo Site Area to Become a Global Future Business District... International Design Competition Underway
Seoul City announced on the 17th that it will hold an international design competition to develop the Sampyo site area in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, into a global future business district along the Han River.
The Sampyo site is the first case of the "Architectural Innovation-type Prior Negotiation" among Seoul City's urban and architectural design innovation measures. While Nodeul Island was a pilot project in the public sector, the Sampyo site will be promoted in the private sector.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced his plan to develop the Sampyo site and Seongsu area into a global future business district along the Han River during his business trip to Europe last March.
This competition will be conducted by inviting four world-renowned architects to create creative and innovative designs. The invited architects are SOM from the United States, who designed the Burj Khalifa; David Chipperfield from the United Kingdom, who designed the Amorepacific headquarters; J?rgen Mayer from Germany, who designed Zipper-RKM 740; and KPF from the United States, who designed 10&30 Hudson Yards.
Seoul City plans to receive development proposals from them to establish the Sampyo site (including the project site and surrounding connection areas) as a hub for advanced industries (TAMI).
The proposals will include spatial planning utilizing cutting-edge technology, development plans for a future-oriented advanced industry (TAMI) hub, and architectural plans to enhance connectivity with the surroundings such as Seoul Forest and waterfront areas, aiming to create spaces where global companies want to settle.
Additionally, ideas for linkage and facility specialization plans with surrounding areas such as Seoul Forest, waterfront, and Seongsu using public contributions will also be solicited.
The project entity, SP Seongsu PFV Co., Ltd., distributed the competition guidelines to the invited architects on the 15th and plans to hold an on-site briefing session in early June for the designated architects regarding the Sampyo site and the Seoul Forest, waterfront, and Seongsu areas. Proposals will be submitted in September, followed by an internal review to select the preferred negotiation candidate.

Hong Seon-gi, Director of Future Space Planning at Seoul City, said, "We expect innovative works that will lead the Sampyo site and Seongsu area into a future global business district along the Han River through the participation of world-class architects." He added, "The Sampyo site is the first case of the 'Architectural Innovation-type Prior Negotiation' among urban architectural design innovation measures, and it is also the first attempt to promote an international design competition through public-private cooperation. We hope that successful project implementation will stabilize the system and provide an opportunity for many other private projects to participate in the future."
