Author Na Hyerim Scheduled to Give a Lecture on the Theme ‘Clover’ at Dongdo Middle School on the 24th
Mayor Park Gang-su of Mapo-gu: “What Matters Most Is the Joy of Reading; We Will Strive to Develop Engaging Educational Programs”
According to the 2021 National Reading Survey conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the average annual number of books read by elementary, middle, and high school students was 34.4, a decrease of 6.6 books compared to 2019.
In particular, elementary school students showed a decrease of 20.3 books, indicating a need for fundamental measures to foster students’ interest in reading.
In response, Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) plans to operate a program called ‘Joy of Reading at School,’ providing students with a special opportunity to meet authors?who they previously could only encounter through books?directly at their schools and engage in conversations.
Following a demand survey conducted in March targeting all elementary, middle, and high schools in the area, 21 schools applied to participate, and 21 authors were selected based on the preferences of students at each school.
The selected authors will visit schools to give lectures on various topics to students and parents, including ▲Making Friends with Artificial Intelligence ▲How to Communicate with Adolescents ▲Picture Book Lecture ‘Making Paper Toys’ ▲and ‘Meeting Myself Within Me’ by Nana, among others, followed by interactive sessions with the students.
Starting with Ahyeon Middle School on the 3rd, author Na Hyerim’s lecture on the theme ‘Clover’ is scheduled at Dongdo Middle School on the 24th, with the program continuing at each school according to schedule through November.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “Although convenient and practical reading media such as e-books have become widespread alongside paper books, the most important thing is the joy of reading. Rather than seeing reading as just studying and losing interest, we will seek diverse educational programs that allow students to experience the joy of discovering new worlds through reading.”
