First 'M-Fox' Confirmed Case Reported in Chungnam
The first confirmed case of MPox (Monkeypox) has been reported in the Chungnam region.
On the 1st, Chungnam Province announced that Mr. A tested positive for MPox on the 29th of last month.
The patient visited a hospital in another region on the 26th of last month due to symptoms such as lymphadenopathy, rash, and fever.
The hospital collected a specimen from Mr. A and requested testing at the local Health and Environment Research Institute, which confirmed a positive diagnosis.
He is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment in an isolation ward at the hospital where the diagnostic test was conducted.
It was confirmed that Mr. A had not traveled abroad within three weeks prior to symptom onset (from the 24th), suggesting that the infection was transmitted domestically.
In response to the occurrence of an MPox case in the region, the province has formed an epidemiological investigation team to conduct an in-depth epidemiological investigation and contact tracing.
Additionally, to prepare for community spread, five dedicated hospital beds and treatment supplies for 12 patients have been secured.
The provincial Health and Environment Research Institute has also been operating an emergency diagnostic system since last month. Previously, since July of last year, the institute had established a diagnostic system by completing proficiency evaluations, and securing testing equipment and reagents.
MPox is classified as a second-class infectious disease and presents symptoms such as fever, rash on the face, mouth, hands, feet, anus, and genital areas, chills, and headache.
Unlike COVID-19, this infectious disease is transmitted through close contact such as skin-to-skin or sexual contact, and the likelihood of transmission through casual contact is known to be low.

A provincial official stated, “Most MPox patients recover naturally, and since the region has established systems for diagnosis and treatment, there is no need for excessive anxiety. We ask that anyone who has visited countries with MPox outbreaks or has risk factors such as close contact (skin or sexual contact) with suspected patients report to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency call center or the local public health center.”
