Jeonnam Province Achieves National Highest for 5 Consecutive Years in Improving Living Conditions in Vulnerable Areas
Jeonnam Province achieved the remarkable feat of having 24 out of 91 nationwide locations (26%) selected for the 2023 Vulnerable Area Living Conditions Improvement Project by the National Balanced Development Committee, marking the highest number of selections for five consecutive years.
According to the province on the 28th, this year, 29 villages from 19 cities and counties in Jeonnam applied, with 3 urban villages and 21 rural fishing villages ultimately selected.
The selected villages will receive approximately 3 billion KRW per urban site and 1.5 billion KRW per rural site in national funding over four years to improve residential environments through renovations of vacant and aging houses, slate roof upgrades, and water and sewage system improvements, as well as to promote various community revitalization projects including culture, welfare, and job creation.
Jeonnam Province’s achievement of the highest number of selections for five consecutive years is attributed to the involvement of experts from various fields throughout the entire process?from the establishment of application plans by cities and counties to preparation for presentations?providing advice and preliminary evaluations.
The three selected urban villages are Yongdang 1 District in Yongdang-dong, Mokpo; Namsan District in Namsan-dong, Yeosu; and Ichang District in Ichang-dong, Naju.

Jang Heon-beom, Director of Planning and Coordination at Jeonnam Province, stated, “We will actively support transforming villages with vulnerable living conditions into desirable places to live by improving residential environments such as expanding living infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, the 2023 Vulnerable Area Living Conditions Improvement Project received applications from 126 villages nationwide, and after on-site and presentation evaluations by the Balanced Development Committee, a total of 91 locations were selected, including 11 urban and 80 rural fishing villages.
