Sunchon National University Successfully Concludes Digital Seedling Camp
Operation of Digital Camps for Elementary, Middle, and High School Students During Vacation
Suncheon National University (Acting President Kang Ui-seong) announced that it has successfully completed the digital seed camp "Vacation SW·AI Education Camp" operated for local elementary, middle, and high school students.
The "Digital New Seed (Software·AI Camp)" camp was implemented nationwide to stimulate interest and curiosity about future industries such as software and artificial intelligence ahead of the full expansion of SW education and to resolve digital education imbalances between regions.
Suncheon National University was selected as an operating university by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity last December and operated the camp free of charge during the winter vacation for students in Jeonnam, Chungbuk, and Chungnam regions.
A total of 815 students from 26 schools participated in 65 activities, including a special camp held on the 18th of this month.
Suncheon National University operated the camp in connection with school subjects, centered on the Department of Computer Education and information and computer teachers from frontline schools.
The camp was divided into three types: on-campus group sessions (25 times), visiting sessions to various schools (30 times), and special sessions for remote areas and multicultural students (10 times), offering 45 hands-on and experiential programs such as "Drawing with AI" and "Flying Drones."
Each session involved about 15 students conducting self-directed projects using various teaching aids with IT field expert instructors, experiencing a digital environment converging data science, Internet of Things, drones, intelligent robots, artificial intelligence, and software.
Professor Won Ho So, who led the project from the Department of Computer Education, said, "We prepared the camp so that students could directly experience digital technologies that were difficult to access before, feel interest, and develop thinking skills and a spirit of challenge through learning." He added, "We will continue to support in various ways so that continuous education can be provided at schools, including donating the equipment used in the camp to participating schools."
Meanwhile, from May to November, the Department of Computer Education at Suncheon National University plans to provide experiential education on artificial intelligence and data science for first- and second-year high school students in Jeonnam through the "AI High School Talent Development Project" supported by the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education, totaling 40 hours.
