Jeju Island Takes Steps to Develop Support Measures for the Pet Industry
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 20th that as the number of pet-owning households steadily increases, the pet food and pet supplies market is growing alongside it, prompting the province to gather opinions from related industries and prepare systematic support measures.
The number of registered animals in the province increased 2.3 times from 23,264 in 2018 to 53,029 in 2022. Related businesses also doubled from 155 in 2018 to 302 in 2022, showing significant growth in the market size and value of the pet-related industry.
In response, Jeju Province held a meeting with representatives of pet-related industry companies at the Environmental Maru conference room in the provincial government office on the morning of the same day.
Six companies engaged in manufacturing, selling, and renting pet food (snacks) and related supplies operating within the province attended the meeting.
The province listened to the industry's difficulties, shared government policies, and agreed that both the private sector and administration will work together to ensure the stable growth and development of the pet-related industry.
Last year, Jeju Province, together with Jeju Tourism Organization, provided information on 200 pet-friendly businesses through a survey conducted under Visit Jeju’s ‘Honjeoopseogae’ program, and this year aims to discover an additional 150 new pet-friendly businesses to expand pet-related infrastructure.
Furthermore, to systematically foster and support the pet-related industry, the province has established a legal basis under the ‘Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Animal Protection and Welfare Ordinance’ and is implementing legislative notice to build the necessary system.
Mungyeongsam, Director of the Jeju Provincial Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food, stated, “As the number of pet-owning households increases, the demand for pet food and related pet supplies continues to grow. We will lay the foundation and strengthen administrative support so that the pet-related industry can become a new growth engine for the Jeju region.”
