54% Increase in Transfer Admission Quotas Over 4 Years... Rapid Growth in Eduwill Students Too
Over the past five years, both the number of transfer admissions and applicants at major domestic universities have increased by more than 50%, leading to a significant rise in demand for transfer education.
Comprehensive education company Eduwill announced on the 14th that the number of online lecture attendees using its university transfer lecture site has increased by 950% over the past eight months (June 2022 to February 2023).
According to Eduwill's analysis of University Alimi data, the number of dropouts from four-year universities nationwide reached 97,000 in 2021. This is the highest number since the University Alimi disclosure began in the 2007 academic year. Even SKY universities (Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University), considered top-tier, saw a more than 21% increase in students who gave up their enrollment compared to the previous year. The continuous increase in dropouts is attributed to a combination of factors, including a preference for stable majors due to employment difficulties, natural science students shifting to medical fields, and a preference for schools in the metropolitan area.
Universities are filling the vacancies caused by dropouts through transfer admissions. The general transfer admission quota for 2023 at nine major top-tier universities?Korea University, Yonsei University, Sogang University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University, Chung-Ang University, Kyung Hee University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and University of Seoul?is 2,020 students. Compared to 1,309 students in 2019, this represents a 54.3% increase over four years.
As the number of admissions increases, more university students are attempting to "transfer up" to top-tier universities through transfer admissions. The number of general transfer applicants to the nine top universities in Seoul for 2023 increased by 50% compared to 2019, reaching 39,682. Including bachelor’s degree transfers, the total approaches approximately 50,000. Even considering duplicates due to multiple applications, the clear upward trend is noteworthy.
