70% of College Students Plan Part-Time Jobs Near Campus
Job Competition Expected to Be Fiercer Than Previous Years
"To Cover Living Expenses and Allowance" Tops at 84.2%
Seven out of ten college students plan to look for part-time jobs.
According to a survey conducted by the part-time job portal 'Alba Cheonguk' on its website and mobile app from the 17th to the 21st of last month, 71.6% of 1,110 college students responded that they would seek part-time jobs around campus with the start of the new semester.
In particular, among the freshmen of the class of 2023, 4 out of 5 (79.7%) reported plans to look for part-time work.
This is the highest figure compared to the same survey conducted over the past three years (67.8% in 2021, 58.0% in 2022), indicating that competition for part-time jobs on campuses this year is expected to be fiercer than usual.

View original imageThe main reason college students start looking for part-time jobs at the beginning of the semester is to cover living expenses and pocket money during the semester (84.2%, multiple responses allowed).
Following that were responses such as ▲gaining social experience and building credentials (29.1%) ▲saving a lump sum for studying abroad or travel (24.9%) ▲covering tuition fees (20.5%).
The advantages of 'campus part-time jobs' cited by students included reduced commuting time (55.6%) and lower commuting costs (40.9%).
Other advantages mentioned were ▲making good use of free periods between classes (34.3%) ▲availability of part-time jobs with relatively flexible schedules (23.4%) ▲being able to get job reviews from peers, seniors, and juniors (13.7%).
The most preferred part-time job sectors on campus were ‘food and beverage’ such as fast food, coffee shops, and bakeries, accounting for 71.9%, ranking first. This was followed by ▲distribution and sales (49.1%) ▲culture, leisure, and lifestyle (33.8%) ▲service (14.8%) ▲education and tutoring (13.7%) ▲office and accounting (13.1%) ▲media (5.4%).
The most common desired working period was '3 to 6 months,' corresponding to one semester (44.7%), and the desired hourly wage averaged 10,270 KRW, which is 650 KRW higher than the 2023 minimum wage of 9,620 KRW.
