On the 7th (local time), AFP and BBC reported on the condition of Adia (female) and Adrial (male), who were born 18 weeks early in Canada. The twins were born on March 4, 2022, weighing 330g and 420g respectively. At the time, doctors said the babies had a 0% chance of survival.
Their mother, Shakina Rajendram, explained in an interview with Guinness World Records (GWR), "When labor started, the hospital refused life support measures," adding, "We almost lost them." The Rajendram couple then moved to a hospital in Toronto with a neonatal intensive care unit and worked to protect the babies until they reached 22 weeks, when resuscitation attempts became possible.
Less than two hours after reaching 22 weeks, the amniotic sac ruptured, and the babies were born very small and frail compared to their peers. After receiving treatment for complications such as brain hemorrhage and sepsis for six months, the babies returned home. According to GWR, Adia grew to 18 times her birth weight.
