China Hopes German Chancellor Plays Constructive Role in Easing Ukraine Tensions
Seemingly Aware of the Decision to Support Ukrainian Tanks
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and said, regarding the Ukraine-Russia war, "I hope Germany will play a constructive role in easing the situation," according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 18th.
According to the report, Wang Yi visited Germany the previous day to attend the Munich Security Conference (MSC) and held talks with Chancellor Scholz, stating, "China has always stood on the side of peace, committed to promoting peace talks and calling for an early ceasefire." Wang Yi is the director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office of the Party and the highest-ranking official in China's diplomatic line.
Wang Yi also said, "China and Germany, as independent major powers, share a common responsibility to safeguard world peace and address global challenges." This remark is interpreted as being mindful of Germany's recent decision to support Ukraine with its main battle tank, the Leopard 2.
