Police to Send Former National Police Agency Chief to Prosecution for 'Violation of Attorney Act'
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The police have decided to refer former National Police Agency Commissioner A, who is accused of violating the Attorney-at-Law Act, to the prosecution. It is clear that A engaged in legal work on a specific case without a lawyer's license.
According to a compilation of reports on the 27th, the Major Crimes Investigation Division of the National Police Agency, which is investigating this case, recently reached this conclusion and is in the final stages of legal review. Earlier, in May last year, the police detected allegations that A violated the Attorney-at-Law Act while serving as a legal advisor at a foreign law firm and have been conducting an investigation.
A is suspected of performing legal work and receiving fees without a lawyer's license during the handling of cases filed at the law firm in 2021. Under the current Attorney-at-Law Act, anyone without a lawyer's license who receives money or other benefits and handles legal affairs for specific cases is subject to imprisonment for up to seven years or a fine of up to 50 million won.
It is reported that A has consistently denied the allegations since the beginning of the investigation. He argued that he did not perform legal work but only indirectly assisted cases taken by lawyers at the same law firm, and also claimed that he did not receive any fees.
