Not an Accidental Shooting... Investigation Underway on How the Firearm Was Obtained
A 6-year-old first-grade boy shot and seriously injured a teacher who was disciplining him at an elementary school in the United States.
According to foreign media such as the AP and CNN, the incident occurred around 2 p.m. local time on the 6th at an elementary school classroom in Newport News, Virginia. The perpetrator, a first-grade student, argued back with a female teacher in her 30s and then fired a handgun at her. The teacher was seriously injured and was once in critical condition, but has since stabilized after receiving treatment.
The student who fired the gun reportedly brought the handgun to school and committed the act, and the police are investigating how he came to possess the firearm. The police stated, "The student fired one shot aimed at the teacher," clarifying that this was not an accidental discharge. They also explained, "No one was roaming around the school shooting scene," and "The situation occurred only at the specific location where the handgun was fired."
According to the Virginia Department of Education, the school where the incident occurred has a total of 558 students enrolled from kindergarten through fifth grade. There were no other injuries to students or teachers from the shooting, but it was reported that the students were deeply shocked and some burst into tears.
Afterwards, all students evacuated to the school gymnasium, where they received assistance from police officers and counselors. When the incident became known, hundreds of parents flocked to the school, and adults were able to enter the gymnasium one at a time to pick up their children. The school will be closed on Monday, the 9th.

Regarding this incident, George Parker, superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, said, "This is a very shocking and heartbreaking event," adding, "Today we have learned the lesson that gun violence destroys not only the educational environment but also our homes and local communities."
