China Urges "Military Relations Suspension" Over US Approval of Taiwan Arms Sales
"Firmly Opposed to the U.S. Selling Weapons to Taiwan"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] China has protested against the United States' approval of arms exports to Taiwan for anti-tank and anti-personnel mine deployment equipment, demanding a halt to military relations.
On the 30th, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular briefing when asked about the U.S. arms export approval, "We firmly oppose the United States selling weapons to Taiwan."
The U.S. Department of State earlier announced on the 28th (local time) that it had authorized the sale of the Volcano mine deployment system and related equipment worth $180 million (approximately 126.7 billion KRW) to Taiwan.
Spokesperson Wang stated, "The United States must comply with the 'One China' principle and the three joint communiques between China and the U.S., firmly fulfill the commitments of U.S. leaders not to support Taiwan independence, stop selling weapons to Taiwan, and cease military relations. It must also stop creating new sources of tension in the Taiwan Strait situation."
