Jeju-si Faces Criticism Over Lax Management of Disabled Parking Spaces
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju City is being criticized for poorly managing disabled parking spaces within public parking lots.
It is reported that the installation of barriers at the entrance to disabled parking spaces due to ongoing construction is infringing on mobility rights, and that parking spaces are being made narrower than the standard specifications, increasing inconvenience.
First, the public parking lot on Yeonbuk-ro in Nohyeong-dong has been undergoing construction since last month to install parking control devices at the entrance in order to convert from free to paid parking.
After installing the control devices, barriers were set up to indicate vehicle entry and exit points, but unfortunately, they are blocking the entrance to the disabled parking spaces, causing complaints.
The parking space is surrounded by structures on all sides, turning it into an island-like area that cannot be used.
Since this is a representative downtown area already suffering from parking shortages, there are many voices calling for a prompt solution.
At the public parking lot on Gukgi-ro in Yeon-dong, the disabled parking space is shaped like a pentagon at one end, but it is so narrow that the front wheels of vehicles park encroach onto the nearby road.
Disabled parking spaces should be installed with dimensions of 3.3 meters in width and 5 meters in length, but this is essentially a 'half-sized' operation.
A disabled person, Mr. A, expressed dissatisfaction, saying, "If it is unavoidable to block the disabled parking space due to construction, can't some general parking spaces be temporarily used? Also, it is questionable how a parking space that falls far short of the specifications was approved and is being operated."
In response, a Jeju City official explained, "The area has been opened for residents' convenience even during construction," and added, "There are plans to relocate the disabled parking space."
Furthermore, the official clarified, "We have determined that there is a problem with the disabled parking space on Gukgi-ro in Yeon-dong, so we will change the current disabled parking space to a compact car-only parking space and install a new disabled parking space at the entrance."
