On the 21st, Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon held the "Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province Establishment Public-Private Joint Promotion Committee Launch Ceremony" at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Northern Office and presented appointment letters to 10 people, including former National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang and Shinhan University President Kang Seong-jong.
The public-private joint promotion committee is a public-private cooperation organization responsible for overall coordination and advisory activities for the establishment of the special self-governing province, consisting of 10 private members and 1 ex officio member (Oh Hu-seok, Deputy Governor for Administration), totaling 11 members.
The committee is composed and operated by experts in four fields: ▲industrial development ▲law and finance ▲autonomous administration ▲communication and publicity, with a term of office until December 20, 2024, lasting two years.
The members are ▲(Special Member) Former National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang ▲(Co-chairman, Private) Shinhan University President Kang Seong-jong ▲Kim Jeong-hoon, Director of the Fiscal Policy Research Institute ▲Geum Chang-ho, Distinguished Research Fellow at the Korea Institute of Local Administration ▲Min Seung-gyu, Former Administrator of the Rural Development Administration ▲Son Kyung-sik, Former CEO of Uijeongbu Cultural Foundation ▲So Soon-chang, President of the Korean Local Autonomy Association ▲Lee Im-seong, President of the Gyeonggi Northern Bar Association ▲Choi Jin-bong, Professor of Journalism and Broadcasting at Sungkonghoe University ▲Park Hae-mi, Musical Actress.
The members participate not only in policy advisory but also in various communication events such as meetings and forums. Gyeonggi Province plans to reflect the major tasks and policy suggestions discussed in the committee in the establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province.
Additionally, the committee plans to expand to up to 30 experts by field through recommendations from existing members.
The organizational restructuring plan has also passed the Gyeonggi Provincial Council and is about to be implemented, and a budget of 1.5 billion KRW has been secured for the cooperative governance and public discussion project for the establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province in next year's budget.
The province plans to conduct a research project on the "Basic Plan, Vision, and Development Strategy for the Establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province" by December next year.
Governor Kim Dong-yeon emphasized, "Gyeonggi North has a population of 3.6 million with excellent human resources, natural environments well preserved that other regions do not have, and includes the symbolism of peace in the context of the inter-Korean confrontation."
He added, "If Gyeonggi North can fully realize its growth potential, I am confident that it can become a center of growth and development not only in South Korea but also internationally."
Meanwhile, nine mayors and county heads of northern Gyeonggi adopted a resolution on the 15th urging the establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province.

In the resolution, they urged, "The National Assembly should promptly enact the 'Special Act on the Establishment of Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province,' and the government and Gyeonggi Province should immediately take action and provide full support for the establishment of the special self-governing province from a grand perspective for regional balanced development."
