On the 20th, the Gyeongnam Autonomous Police Committee announced that they installed recessed LED marker posts spaced apart on both sides of crosswalks without pedestrian signals, which are difficult for drivers to recognize at night.
Gyeongsangnam-do is implementing the ‘Crosswalk Safe Light Project’ to create a traffic environment where residents can walk safely.
The purpose is to enhance nighttime visibility and ensure pedestrian safety through the installation of LED marker posts.
The province explained that it promoted the project by investing 100 million won in special grants secured through a public contest by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, along with 100 million won from city and county funds, to actively respond to traffic accidents at crosswalks.
According to the province, a satisfaction survey conducted among 611 nearby residents and drivers in the project implementation areas showed that an average of 80.2% responded that the project had positive effects.
The satisfaction rate regarding the increased visibility of crosswalks reached 87.2%.
Based on the satisfaction survey results, the Autonomous Police Committee plans to continue expanding the project next year using additional budgets such as special grants and fire safety grants.
The committee evaluated, “This project served as an opportunity for basic local governments to participate as project entities, overcoming the limitations of the metropolitan-level autonomous police system and strengthening cooperation with cities and counties.”
