Suncheonman Wetland, Selected for 'Korea's Top 100 Tourist Attractions' for 6 Consecutive Years
Establishing Suncheonman Wetland and Suncheonman National Garden as Ecotourism Destinations
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu)'s representative tourist destinations, Suncheonman Wetland and Suncheonman National Garden, have been selected for the 'Top 100 Korean Tourist Attractions.'
The 'Top 100 Korean Tourist Attractions' is a project promoted every two years by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, selecting Korea's representative tourist sites that domestic and foreign tourists visiting Korea must visit.
In particular, Suncheonman Wetland has been consecutively selected for the Top 100 Korean Tourist Attractions six times since 2013.
Suncheonman Wetland is Korea's largest reed field spreading widely, with migratory birds flying above it, and life thriving in the mudflats, serving as a passage connecting people and nature, making it a truly representative ecological tourist destination in Korea.
In 2006, Suncheonman Wetland was the first coastal wetland in Korea to be registered under the Ramsar Convention. Subsequently, in 2018, it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and certified as a Ramsar Wetland City, and in 2021, it was listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Meanwhile, next year, the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo will be held from April 1 to October 31 under the theme 'Living in the Garden,' in Suncheonman National Garden and Suncheonman Wetland, both selected for the Top 100 Korean Tourist Attractions, as well as in the downtown area.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon said, "To foster the city as a tourist city that aligns with the UNESCO World Natural Heritage, ecological city, and garden city brands, we will present a new milestone for urban development in Korea that allows for preservation alongside rational use."
Regions selected for the Top 100 Korean Tourist Attractions are also included in the 'Top 100 Korean Tourist Attractions Map' distributed to tourist information centers nationwide and posted on the Korea Tourism Organization's 'Visit Korea' website.
