Samsung, Which Made Smartphone from Discarded Fishing Nets, Selected as Excellent Company by US NGO
'2022 SEAL Sustainability Award' Winner
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Samsung Electronics announced on the 13th that it received the '2022 SEAL (Sustainability, Environmental Achievement and Leadership) Business Sustainability Award' for applying marine waste recycled materials to Galaxy products.
SEAL is an environmental NGO based in California, USA. Since 2017, it has been selecting and awarding outstanding companies leading a sustainable future and environmental development.
SEAL stated that Samsung Electronics was awarded for contributing to environmental improvement by recycling discarded fishing nets, a type of marine waste, into smartphone component materials. It also mentioned that Galaxy users are motivated to pursue a sustainable lifestyle.
Globally, about 640,000 tons of discarded fishing nets are thrown away annually. Left unattended for centuries, they threaten marine life and damage coral reefs and natural habitats.
Samsung Electronics adds innovative technology to collected discarded fishing nets and recycles them into smartphone component materials. Marine waste recycled materials were first introduced in the Galaxy S22 series. Since then, they have been used throughout the Galaxy ecosystem, including tablets, laptops, and earbuds.
Matt Haney, CEO of the SEAL Sustainability Award, said, "We applaud Samsung Electronics for addressing environmental issues through Galaxy products using discarded fishing net materials."
Seongseon Park, Vice President and Head of the MX Business Division Mechanical Development Team at Samsung Electronics, said, "We are very pleased to receive the prestigious SEAL Sustainability Award," adding, "We will do our best in sustainable management through technological innovation and open collaboration."
