Strengthening Safety Inspections for the Qatar World Cup
[Seoul District News] Mapo-gu Continues Safety Inspections in Hongdae Amid Qatar World Cup and Year-End Crowds & Real-Time CCTV Monitoring, Special Safety Inspections, and Order Maintenance Campaign Achieve ZERO Safety Accidents... Geumcheon-gu Holds Disaster Prevention and Safety Comprehensive Measures Task Force (TF) Meeting
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) will conduct a special safety inspection in the Hongdae Tourism Special Zone area, where large crowds are expected due to the Qatar World Cup and the year-end holidays.
This is due to concerns about safety accidents that may occur from crowd density, following the Itaewon incident.
The safety inspection will focus on ▲strengthening CCTV monitoring in expected crowded areas such as Hongdae Street ▲safety inspections and order maintenance campaigns ▲and emergency situation communication in case of dangerous situations.
The inspection period includes the dates of Korea’s matches in the Qatar World Cup on November 24, November 28, and December 2, as well as December 23 to 24 and December 30 to 31 in preparation for Christmas and the year-end.
The inspection personnel consist of a total of 420 people, including Mapo-gu officials, autonomous crime prevention teams made up of local residents, and honorary tourism security officers, with about 60 people conducting special safety inspections daily during the inspection period.
The district plans to maintain a systematic response according to crowd density situations.
First, the district has established a concentrated CCTV monitoring system for areas in Hongdae expected to have large crowds. Through this, real-time crowd density and accident situations will be identified, and in case of dangerous situations, rapid communication will be made to the police, the district office’s comprehensive situation room, and the special inspection team.
Additionally, during nighttime, focused safety inspections and order maintenance campaigns will be conducted in places that may be dangerous due to crowding, such as alleys and slopes, and to efficiently understand the situation and allocate personnel, the Hongdae area will be divided into six zones with assigned responsibilities.
Subsequently, if a dangerous situation occurs due to crowding, the site will be immediately controlled, and crowd inflow will be blocked and detours will be promptly guided to disperse the crowd.
In particular, a system will be established to share information with Mapo Police Station and Mapo Fire Station to ensure immediate safety measures can be taken in case of emergencies.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We will do our utmost to prevent accidents so that tragedies like the Itaewon incident, which brought sorrow to the entire nation, never happen again,” and added, “Mapo-gu will build and strengthen a rapid response system and thorough safety inspections to protect the precious lives of residents and prevent accidents.”
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon) held a ‘Disaster Prevention and Safety Comprehensive Measures Task Force (TF) Meeting’ on the 23rd at 5 p.m. in the small conference room of the district office, chaired by Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon.
The Geumcheon-gu ‘Disaster Prevention and Safety Comprehensive Measures Task Force (TF)’ is composed of the Resident Safety Division, which is the general disaster management department, and 10 other departments closely related to residents’ safety to comprehensively respond to disaster situations.
At this meeting, 16 key issues were set, and each department presented measures including safety status checks, system improvements, and budget securing.
Particularly, focused discussions were held on multi-use crowded facilities, electric vehicle facilities, illegal and aging buildings, which have a high possibility of safety accidents.
Based on the discussions, the Geumcheon-gu Disaster Prevention and Safety Comprehensive Measures Task Force (TF) plans to establish and implement a comprehensive safety plan, and if there are any shortcomings, additional meetings will be held to supplement safety measures.
