31 Gang Members from Gwangju City Center Charged in Additional Prosecution for 'Mass Brawl'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Gang members who engaged in a mass brawl in the city center and attempted to wage an all-out war between violent organizations have been brought to trial.
The Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office Anti-Corruption and Violent Crime Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Choi Soon-ho) held a briefing on the 14th and announced that 18 people including A (23) were indicted in custody, and 13 people including B (27) were indicted without detention on charges of violating the Act on the Punishment of Violent Crimes (organization formation and activities).
Six minors including B (16) were referred to juvenile protection cases, and a wanted notice was issued for one person who is currently on the run.
They were indicted on charges of engaging in a brawl involving seven people at a bar in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, in the early morning of January 27, and then gathering their respective gang members for retaliatory assault.
Members of the Chungjang OB-pa gang visited a member of the Gukje PJ-pa gang and assaulted him in retaliation, demanding information on the whereabouts of others.
In response, members of the Gukje PJ-pa gang split into seven vehicles, carrying steel pipes and other weapons, and went in search of rival gang members. Eventually, the two gangs gathered their members at an amusement park in downtown Gwangju.
Upon receiving intelligence, the police dispatched officers to the scene, causing the gang members to immediately disperse. Through the investigation, about 40 gang members who had gone into hiding were apprehended and referred to prosecution.
Among them, 10 have already stood trial, and there are additional gang members newly charged by the prosecution.
