Gyeonggi Province announced on the 14th that the Public Deliberation Promotion Team held the second deliberation meeting on the 12th at the Gyeonggi Economic Science Promotion Agency in Gwanggyo Technovalley, Yeongtong, Suwon, to resolve the issue of the military airport within the city and completed the procedure for gathering public opinion. The promotion team plans to deliver the final policy recommendation to Governor Kim Dong-yeon in December.
The deliberation meeting was attended by 97 residents who participated in the first deliberation on October 1st, and was conducted in a format reviewing the main issues raised in the first deliberation under the theme "Considerations for a Rational Resolution of the Military Airport Issue within the City." Following this, three experts presented various perspectives on solutions being discussed for the military airport issue, including closure and relocation of the military airport and the integrated establishment of an international airport.
The discussion proceeded in the same manner as the first deliberation, with the resident participation group and facilitators (assistants who help participants engage more actively in discussions) divided into teams for subgroup discussions and then sharing the results.
Through the roundtable meeting, the resident participation group presented various opinions as alternatives to the military airport issue, such as the necessity of relocating the military airport even if it takes a long time, relocating the military airport through integrated installation with a civilian airport, and the need to reconsider preliminary candidate sites for relocation.
They also agreed on the necessity of resident voting and deliberation, and called for strengthening public relations and information sharing through the establishment of a dedicated organization, as well as active involvement from the central government and Gyeonggi Province.
The Public Deliberation Promotion Team (Director Choi Soon-young), which is responsible for gathering residents' opinions, will organize the contents of the resident participation group's deliberations and share the results of the public deliberation project with residents next month. Afterwards, the team will deliver the final policy recommendation for resolving the military airport issue to Governor Kim Dong-yeon.
Yeom Tae-young, Deputy Governor for Economy of the province, emphasized, "The more difficult the issue, the more we need to gather opinions from many residents to find a reasonable solution," and added, "We will respect the alternatives created by the residents as much as possible while promoting them."
