Arrival in Bali for G20 after completing ASEAN schedule in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
[Bali (Indonesia) = Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the fourth day of his Southeast Asia tour, President Yoon Suk-yeol stated on the 14th (local time) that "we will discuss Korea's role in overcoming the complex global economic crisis and present economic cooperation measures."
President Yoon mentioned this in a post on Facebook early that day, saying, "The schedule for the Group of Twenty (G20) summit is about to begin."
During his Southeast Asia tour, President Yoon attended ASEAN-related summits, the East Asia Summit (EAS), and Korea-US, Korea-Japan, and Korea-US-Japan trilateral summits in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from the 11th to the 13th, before heading to Bali.
President Yoon warned, "Many citizens are concerned due to North Korea's unprecedented provocations. The Republic of Korea and the United States will maintain a robust combined defense posture through seamless ROK-US cooperation," adding, "We will also closely consult on measures to strengthen extended deterrence, and if North Korea uses nuclear weapons in any form, we will respond with overwhelming force."
He also introduced the military and economic security achievements from the Korea-US-Japan trilateral summit held in Phnom Penh. President Yoon explained, "At the Korea-US-Japan summit, President Biden of the United States, Prime Minister Kishida of Japan, and I shared the recognition of the need to further strengthen trilateral cooperation for peace and stability in Northeast Asia," adding, "Moreover, we agreed to establish the 'Korea-US-Japan Economic Security Dialogue,' a dialogue channel to enhance trilateral cooperation in economic security areas such as advanced technology, supply chains, and energy."
He continued, "We discussed real-time information sharing among the three countries regarding North Korean missiles, trilateral solidarity to respond to economic coercion, and joint responses to complex challenges such as supply chain disruptions, climate change, and the digital economy," emphasizing, "Based on these discussions, we issued a joint statement by the Korea-US-Japan leaders. This is significant as it is the first time a comprehensive joint statement has been adopted."
President Yoon also conveyed that, marking the 70th anniversary of the Korea-US alliance, Korea has officially decided to participate in the 'Partners in the Blue Pacific' initiative to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN and Pacific island countries. Regarding this, he said, "President Biden not only welcomed our decision but also mentioned that we will meet again in Washington next year to have more in-depth discussions about the future of the Korea-US alliance."
