Yoon: "Strengthening Rule-Based International Order... Creating a Prosperous Indo-Pacific Region"
President Yoon: "ASEAN, the core of the Indo-Pacific region, is directly linked to international peace and prosperity"
[Phnom Penh (Cambodia) = Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the 12th (local time), President Yoon Suk-yeol stated, "We will strengthen the rules-based international order to contribute to peace and stability in the region, and create a prosperous Indo-Pacific region through an open and fair economic order."
On the second day of his Southeast Asia tour, President Yoon posted on Facebook in the afternoon, "Following the Korea-ASEAN and ASEAN+3 summits, I held talks with the leaders of Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines, where we had in-depth discussions on our Indo-Pacific strategy and the Korea-ASEAN solidarity initiative."
President Yoon emphasized, "Sixty-five percent of the world's population lives in the Indo-Pacific, and half of global maritime transport passes through this area. The peace and stability of the ASEAN region, the core of the Indo-Pacific, are directly linked not only to the prosperity of the Republic of Korea but also to the peace and prosperity of the international community."
He continued, "This is the core of our government's Indo-Pacific strategy and is based on the spirit of freedom and solidarity that I have always emphasized."
President Yoon also added, "In addition to strengthening cooperation in security and economic fields, we will further enhance economic and technological cooperation to respond to climate change, cooperation in the energy sector, and responsibly contribute to cooperation in digital and health sectors, where special cooperation with us is desired."
He then stressed, "I have emphasized that now is the time to closely cooperate and unite with ASEAN," and reiterated, "As announced at the Korea-ASEAN summit, in 2024, we will establish a 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' between Korea and ASEAN and strive for joint prosperity and development based on a cooperation fund."
