[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] On November 11 at 11:00 AM, a one-minute memorial siren will sound throughout Busan.
Busan City will hold the "Turn Toward Busan" UN Veterans International Memorial Ceremony and Interment Ceremony, a simultaneous global moment of silence and memorial event directed toward the Busan UN Memorial Cemetery, at 10:50 AM on the 11th at the UN Memorial Cemetery.
The event's slogan is "Turn Toward Busan," symbolizing a one-minute moment of silence at 11:00 AM on November 11 to remember and mourn together with the public the noble sacrifices and contributions of the 22 UN member countries and UN veterans who participated in the Korean War to protect the Republic of Korea's liberal democracy.
About 600 people will attend the memorial ceremony, including domestic and international UN veterans and their families, foreign diplomatic envoys in Korea, key government officials, and senior military officers.
The event will proceed starting with the entrance of the flags of the participating countries, followed by ▲ one-minute moment of silence "Turn Toward Busan" ▲ remarks by representatives of the participating countries ▲ dedication performance ▲ government awards ▲ memorial speeches ▲ memorial performances.
After the memorial ceremony, the interment ceremony for three UN veterans?Matthias Hubertus Hohenborm (Netherlands), Eduard Julius Engberink (Netherlands), and James Grundy (United Kingdom)?will take place.
The late James Grundy served as a British military body recovery team member during the war and visited the UN Memorial Cemetery annually for over 30 years to honor the sacrifices of his comrades buried there.
He left a will requesting to be buried beside his comrades in Korea and was selected as an honorary citizen of Busan in June, shortly before his death. An honorary citizenship certificate will also be awarded at the interment ceremony.
The "Turn Toward Busan UN Veterans International Memorial Ceremony" is an event to observe a one-minute moment of silence directed toward the Busan UN Memorial Cemetery, the only place in the world where the war dead from 22 countries who fought in the Korean War are buried.
The event began in 2007 following a proposal by Canadian veteran Vincent Courtney and was designated as a legal memorial day in 2020.
Park Hyung-jun, Mayor of Busan, said, "I ask for your great interest in this meaningful event to mourn together with people around the world the noble sacrifices and contributions of UN veterans from 22 countries toward Busan, the only city in the world with a UN Memorial Cemetery. We will also do our best to raise Busan's status as a city of world peace, strengthen its diplomatic role, and attract the 2030 World Expo to Busan."
