[Asia Economy Reporter Seo Mideum] Writer An Kyung-hee's short story "The Whale's Song" has been honored with the grand prize at the 10th Lighthouse Literature Award contest. The Lighthouse Literature Award was established to promote and develop maritime literature under the theme "Lighthouse and Sea."
Hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and jointly organized by the Ulsan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office and Ulsan Port Authority, this year's contest received 800 submissions from June 27 to September 13.
The grand prize-winning "The Whale's Song" received high praise from the judges for sublimating the fragments of a life full of hardships connected to the sea into a compassionate embrace of neighbors sharing the same fate.
The Excellence Awards were given to Kim Nabi's "The Diver" in poetry and sijo, Hwang Jin-sook's "Tracing the Scarred Stone" in essays and memoirs, and Kim Sung-jun's "The Spirit of the Naval Battle" in short stories. A total of nine works were selected for the Merit Award.
The prize money is 5 million KRW for the grand prize (Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award), 3 million KRW for the Excellence Awards, and 1.5 million KRW for the Merit Awards.
